Through the National Weather Service (NWS) Cooperative Observer Program (COOP), more t volunteers take daily weather observations at National Parks, seashores, mountaintops, and farms as well as in urban and suburban areas. COOP data usually consist of daily maximum and minimum temperatures, snowfall, and hour precipitation totals.

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque serves the northern two-thirds of New Mexico, and we are often looking for new cooperative weather observers. We are most interested in areas of the state where Cooperative Weather Stations are few and far between.

The NWS goal is a spacing of about one station every 25 miles (one per square miles. Each and every day, a wide spectrum of users access these weather data sets to solve problems and plan their lives.

Whether it is a rancher in New Mexico, a climate scientist in Europe, or a weather enthusiast in New York, the weather data sets that our cooperative weather observers collect have a profound impact on society.
